Where Do The Church Denominations Stand On Abortion?

E-mail Print

God created us, we human beings, in His Image. You would think we would not want to kill an innocent baby in his mother’s womb, that life is sacred. Yes, that baby will be born with a sinful nature, but he has not done any evil deed deserving death as would one who murderers another.

It is especially disturbing that ‘born again’ Christians are involved in abortions. You would think that the pastors would have made it clear that the child in the womb is fully human and should be protected.

But that is not the case. A great number pastors, maybe a majority, support abortion in varying degrees. And, their denominations have passed resolutions taking a stand in support of abortion.

Pro-Abortion Denominations:

  • American Baptist Church
  • Christian Church (Disciple Of Christ)
  • Episcopal Church
  • Evangelical Lutheran Church In America
  • Jewish Reconstructionist Federation
  • Presbyterian Church (USA)
  • Union For Reform Judaism
  • Unitarian Universalist Association
  • United Church Of Christ
  • The United Methodist Church
  • United Synagogue For Conservative Judaism

The Religious Institute on Sexual Morality, Justice and Healing, the Religious Coalition on Reproductive Choice, Catholics for Choice, and Planned Parenthood Federation of America Clergy Network claim they represent more than 10,000 religious leaders who believe in abortion.

Pro-Life Denominations:

  • Southern Baptist Convention*
  • Presbyterian Church Of America
  • Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod
  • The Roman Catholic Church
  • Assembly Of God
  • The Orthodox Church In America
  • Independent Bible/Evangelical Churches
  • Church of the Nazarene

*Not all Southern Baptist are pro-life. In two of the most liberal States, the Virginia and Texas Conventions are pro-abortion and identify primarily with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, a breakaway convention from the Southern Baptist.

Conservative Baptist from Virginia and Texas has formed breakaway groups from the official state conventions and are pro-life.
