Physical Complexities
The almost unbelievable physical complexities of the human body cry out for an intelligent creation. If you had visited a doctor’s office recently you may have observed the following: In a family doctor’s office you may have seen a chart of all the over 200 bones in the human body. Each one designed to do exactly what it does do. The bones are held in place by cartilage and muscle and only permit predetermined limits of movement. The lymph system, blood circulatory system, and the human heart are almost beyond human understanding. For a senior citizen, the heart has pumped approximately two and one half billion times, starting before birth, and if it misses a single beat it can be a crisis.
The human brain, with its hundreds of thousands of connections and its information processing capabilities, puts the most advanced computers to shame. The eye in humans, animals, and insects far exceeds the most advanced scientific equipment. The above examples only scratch the surface of the complexities of living creatures. Who could possibly question an intelligent designer?
Dr. Dini, of Texas University, wrote the following concerning recommendations for medical school: “The central unifying principle of biology is the theory of evolution which extends to all species. Someone who denied evolution could make bad clinical decisions and has committed malpractice regarding the methods of science.”
Since we can assume Dr. Dini is not a stupid man, we can safely assume he is referring to microevolution, since neither he nor any other scientist has ever come up with a single proven example of macroevolution. The clear definition of micro and macroevolution will be the death knell of Darwinian evolution. Faith in the Lord is far better than faith in the impossible.
Bill Nowers points at the human body and asks a question every honest observer has to answer. Where did all of this come from? Two hundred bones, each shaped for a specific purpose. A heart that beats without pause for eighty years. A brain that runs circles around every supercomputer we have ever built. This is not the picture of a happy accident. This is the picture of a design so precise that trying to explain it without a Designer requires more faith than believing in one.
A Body That Cries Out for a Designer
Consider what Bill highlights. Over 200 bones in the human body, each one shaped for a specific purpose. Held in place by cartilage and muscle. Permitted to move only within predetermined limits. This is not random assembly. This is engineered arrangement.
Then there is the heart. For a senior citizen, that muscle has pumped roughly two and a half billion times without stopping. It started beating before birth and has not taken a single day off since. Miss one beat and the whole system falters. Miss a few in a row and life ends. What kind of blind, unguided process produces a pump that runs for eighty years without maintenance?
A machine that runs for a lifetime without stopping is not the product of a happy accident. It is the mark of a Maker.
The Brain and Eye — Beyond Human Understanding
Bill’s next point is even more striking. The human brain has hundreds of thousands — actually hundreds of trillions — of connections. Every advance in computer science tries to catch up to what the brain already does effortlessly. And after decades of neuroscience research, science still cannot explain consciousness itself. We can map the brain’s regions. We cannot explain how a network of cells produces awareness, meaning, or the capacity to reason about God.
The eye is no simpler. Charles Darwin himself confessed that the thought of the eye evolving by chance gave him “a cold shudder.” He was right to shudder. The eye adjusts to varying light in fractions of a second, corrects for motion, coordinates with the brain, and delivers a three-dimensional image in full color. Every camera humanity has built is a crude imitation of what an eye does before breakfast.
Bill’s question is the right one. Who could possibly question an intelligent designer?
The Sleight of Hand Bill Exposes
Dr. Dini’s quote is doing important work in Bill’s essay. Dini claims that evolution is “the central unifying principle of biology” and that anyone who denies it commits “malpractice.” That is a strong claim. But Bill catches the trick. What kind of evolution is Dr. Dini actually talking about?
If he means microevolution — small variations within a kind, like bacteria developing antibiotic resistance or finches developing different beak sizes — every Christian agrees. That is observable. That is testable. That is real science. It is also completely irrelevant to the origin of the human body.
If he means macroevolution — one kind of creature changing into a fundamentally different kind, like a reptile becoming a bird or a fish becoming a mammal — nobody has ever observed it. Not Dr. Dini. Not Charles Darwin. Not any scientist in the 170 years since Darwin published On the Origin of Species. It is inferred from the fossil record and from genetic comparisons, but as we explored in Creation Bullet #14, that is historical science built on the assumption that God was not involved.
Bill’s point is razor-sharp. Once micro and macroevolution are properly distinguished, the case for Darwinian evolution collapses. All Dr. Dini can honestly claim is that some things vary within their kinds. The rest is faith in the impossible.
Faith in the Lord Is Far Better Than Faith in the Impossible
Bill ends with one of his most memorable lines. Faith in the Lord is far better than faith in the impossible.
The evolutionist has faith too. Faith that time plus chance produced 200 bones perfectly shaped and jointed. Faith that random processes assembled a heart that beats for eighty years without failing. Faith that unguided chemistry generated a brain capable of contemplating its own origin. That is faith on a scale that dwarfs anything Christians are ever accused of.
The Christian’s faith rests on something far more reasonable. It rests on the God who declared through David, “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well” (Psalm 139:14). David did not need a microscope to see this. He simply looked at himself and recognized the hand of his Maker.
The evidence has only grown stronger since. Every advance in medicine, every discovery in molecular biology, every new understanding of the brain reinforces what David already knew. The human body is a marvel. And marvels require a Maker.
No argument on a page can change a heart — but the God who fashioned that heart with His own hand can. And He is still calling.
