Christianity is the source of America’s liberty and independence. Our Founders understood this and reminded us to give thanks to God every year when we celebrate American Independence.

John Adams wrote that the day of Independence:

“will be the most memorable epocha in the history of America.—I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding generations … as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty, … from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.”

Concerning observing American Independence, President of the Continental Congress Elias Boudinot said:

“Let us … unite our endeavors this day to remember with reverential gratitude to our Supreme Benefactor all the wonderful things He has done for us, in a miraculous deliverance from a second Egypt – another house of bondage. This day is kept as a day of joy and gladness, because of the great things the Lord has done for us, when we were delivered from the threatening power of an invading foe. Who knows but the country for which we have fought and bled may hereafter become a theater of greater events than have yet been known to mankind? May these invigorating prospects lead us to the exercise of every virtue, religious, moral, and political. And may these great principles, in the end, become instrumental in bringing about that happy state of the world when from every human breast, joined by the grand chorus of the skies, shall arise, with the profoundest reverence, that divinely celestial anthem of universal praise, “Glory to God in the highest; peace on earth; good will towards men.”

Most Americans today have forgotten the source of, and price paid for, our liberty. We have abandoned the principles necessary to live free. We have failed to acknowledge God Almighty as the giver of life and liberty. Consequently, we have begun to lose our liberty, our happiness, and all the fruit that comes from obeying the King of all nations. Let us cry out with our Founders for God to once again deliver us from a house of bondage and use this nation as a “theater of greater events than have yet been known to mankind.”

About the Author

Virginia Christian Alliance
The mission of the VIRGINIA CHRISTIAN ALLIANCE is to promote moral, social and scientific issues we face today from a Biblical point of view. In addition we will refute and oppose, not with hate, but with facts and humor, the secular cultural abuses that have overridden laws and standards of conduct of the past. We will encourage Christians to participate in these efforts through conferences, development of position papers, booklets and tracts, radio/TV spots, newspaper ads and articles and letters-to-the editor, web sites, newsletters and providing speakers for church and civic meetings.
