A group of Richmond area Christian prayer leaders are leading Virginia’s “Response” call for a day of prayer for our nation.  The “Response” call for prayer was initiated by Texas Governor Rick Perry.

Governor Perry has asked all statehouse leaders to issue a call for “Response” in their respective states.

McDonnell_Port_loResMany governors across our land are participating in the “Response” call.  Each state will arrange its own “Response” call program for the day.

The Virginia “Response” Call to Prayer Leadership Team has planned Virginia’s call as follows:

The “Response” will open at 10:00 AM on August 6 at the Meadowood Church of God  with a presentation of Governor Bob McDonnell’s Special Letter of Support. Following the reading of the Governor’s special letter of support, there will be music, announcements, etc.  Throughout the prayer service, members of the Prayer Team will lead those assembled in group and individual prayer for our nation.  From time to time during the day, Christian leaders will come forward to offer prayer and words of hope and encouragement for our nation.   For more information, see our flyer at this link The Response for Virginia

Many of the prayer warriors will spend the entire five hours lifting up our nation to the Lord.  Others will be in attendance and pray for brief periods throughout the prayer event.  People will be coming in and out of the service.  In all, the prayer team is expecting 400 to 500 people will participate in praying for our nation at this designated location.

The prayer team is asking churches and prayer leaders across the Commonwealth to gather in groups for corporate prayer for some period of time during the hours of the National and State Response service.

The prayer team is planning to have a video link to the Houston “Response” as part of its Virginia prayer service.

The Commonwealth’s “Response” prayer team will be reaching out to Christian leaders across the state to either come to the Richmond’s “Response” call, or to participate in one in their own community.  Hopefully, many churches will have a special “Response” call for prayer for our Nation on Sunday morning.

Please consider personally attending the Richmond “Response” and what role you can take leading our nation back to Our Lord Jesus Christ and the Biblical principles that the Lord has given us to live by.

Pray that the Lord will hear our prayers and heal our land.   Also read more about “The Response” at the links below.

July 26, 2011              Christian Leaders:  “The Response”

Please consider how you can personally “respond” to The “Response” call for national prayer on August 6, 2011.

Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell and other state leaders are joining with Governors and church and state leaders in our nation and “responding” to the governor of Texas’ call for national prayer.  Several governors are joining Governor Rick Perry in Houston for the event, while other governors are supporting prayer “Responses” in their respective states.  The Governors’ “Response” has stirred national attention, not all of it is positive.

There is the usual protest about “church and state” from those believing Christians should “pray” behind closed doors and out of the public arena.  You can read comments on the web.

If you visit the “Response” website, you can read what Governor Perry and others are saying at www.theresponseusa.com.

Quotes from the website:

On August 6, Perry will preside over “The Response,” an all-day Christian prayer and fasting rally at Houston’s Reliant Stadium.  The event is to call on God to guide the United States out of its moral, finanacial and political morass.

“Right now, America is in crisis:  we have been besieged by financial debt, terrorism, and a multitude of natural disasters,” Perry says in his message on the event website.  “As a nation, we must come together and call upon Jesus to guide us through unprecedented struggles.”   “There is hope,” Perry says on the website.  “It lies in heaven, and we will find it on our knees.”

“We want the presence, power and person of Christ to fill our nation and turn the hearts of millions to righteousness, peace and joy in Him.”

We would appreciate your donation.

“As a nation, we must come together, call upon Jesus to guide us through unprecedented struggles, and thank Him for the blessings of freedom we so richly enjoy according to His grace, mercy and kindness towards us.”

“We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His personal return in power and glory.”

“For those who couldn’t tell from my name, I’m a Jew.  Not only am I Jew, I’m an Orthodox Jew.  I pray three times a day to the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.  I keep kosher.  I wear phylacteries in the morning, and I say the Shema at night.

And I love Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s “The Response.”

“The Response” is a net positive for the country, without a doubt.  Those who despise traditional religion in general – pro-abortionists, militant gay-marriage ativistis — oppose “The Response” for their own reasons.  But everyone else, religious and secular, should recognize the overwhelming good that displays like “The Response” do for the nation.  Americans still stand for God and country.  Remove one half of that equation, and the rest of the structure falls.”

“Gov. Rick Perry Calls for Prayer to Help our ‘Nation in Crissis'”

“In the Holy Bible, calls for prayer and fasting are frequent responses to dire situations.  Yesterday, Texas Governor Rick Perry emulated those Biblical prophets such as Joel in calling for prayer to help address our national crisis.  Perry’s call for prayer is being directed to a  specific event, “The Response,” which is to be held in Houston on August 6.”

The website for The Response explains why this event is needed:
America is in the midst of a historic crisis.  We have been besieged by financial debt, terrorism, and a multitude of natural disasters.  The youth of America are in grave peril economically, socially, and, most of all, morally.  There are threats emerging within our nation and beyond our borders beyond our power to solve.”

” In Joel Chapter two, an ancient Hebrew prophet speaks to a nation in crisis and gives her God’s solution: gather together, repent of their sins, and pray to God to intervene on their behalf. In that day the command was for everyone to stop what they were doing and gather for a sacred assembly to turn to God with all their hearts, “with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning”  (Joel 2:12).”

“Governor Perry’s “Response” to this nation’s ills – particularly the moral breakdown that is well underway – is precisely what one would expect of a Christian who sees God as the ultimate authority over our world.  The believer seeks God for guidance and goes to him in prayer, not just when he is in need, but at all times.  But as the book of Joel illustrates, in especially dire times such as these, special appeals through prayer and fasting are appropriate.  Governor Perry is promoting exactly what he should be during times of trouble:  a plea to God to save this people and have mercy.”

” Perry is getting support from fellow politicians and pastors alike, Governor Paul LePage of Maine has issued a proclamation naming August 6 as a “Day of Prayer and Fasting for Our Nation.”  The Maine Legislative Prayer Caucus is urging Maine citizens to participate in The Response.  And James O. Davis, cofounder of the Billion Soul Network, is convinced that Perry is following the Holy Spirit’s leading.”

“We need a sweeping, weeping, reaping revival in America,” Davis says.  “The sins that use to embarrass us now entertain us; the sins that use to amaze us now amuse us; the sins that use to a make us weep now make us laugh; the sins that use to slink down back alleys now parade down main street.  We will either have revival or face ruin in this generation.”

The event site says:  “On Agusut 6, thousands will gather to Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas, to pray for a historic breakthrough for our country and a renewed sense of moral purpose.  We want the presence, power, and person of Christ to fill our nation and turn the hearts of millions to righteousness, peace, and joy in Him. . .  We want the blessing and favor of a Holy God who loves righteousness and wants to see righteousness exalt a nation in our generation.  We want to see real change across our nation that only our God can perform.  Will you join us in Houston?  Will you pray, fast, and believe with us for a mighty move of God in our nation again?  There is hope for America.  It lies in heaven, and we will find it on our knees.”

“Our nation is at a crossroads.  More and more Americans are perceiving the critical juncture we find ourselves in – the future of our nation is determined by the courage of its people: first, in recognizing the magnitude of our common trouble; then, by uniting to seize the unique opportunity this moment offers us.  Our response can, in part, determine our future and define for our children – and their children – what kind of nation they will govern, serve, and lead.”

Entering politics does not obligate the public servant to check his/her beliefs at the door. Calls for prayer and fasting have long been used by leaders, including George Washington, John Adams and Abraham Lincoln.

George Washington, in 1775:
This Congress, therefore, considering the present critical, alarming, and calamitious state of these Colonies, do earnestly recommend that, Thursday, the twentieth day of July next, be observed by the inhabitants of all the English Colonies on this Continent, as a day of publick humiliation, fasting and prayer; that we may, with united hearts and voices, allwise, omnipotent, and merciful isposer of all events; humbly beseeching him to forgive our iniquities, to remove our present calamities, to avert those desolating judgments with which we are threatened, and to bless our rightful Sovereign, King George the Third, and iuspire him with wisdom to discern and pursue the true interest of all his subjects, that a speedy end may be put to the civil discord between Great Britain and the American Colonies, without further effusion of blood; and that the British Nation may be influenced to regard the things that belong to her peace, before they are hid from her euyes; that these Colonies may be ever under the care and protection of a kind Providence, and be prospered in all their interests; that the divine blessing may descend and rest upon all our civil rulers, and upon the Representatives of the people in the several Assemblies and Conventions, that they may be directed to wise and effectual measurs for preserving the union, and securing the just rights and privileges of the Colonies; that virtue and thrue religion may revive and flourish throughout our land; and that America may soon behold a gracious interposition of Heaven, for the redress of her many grievancesk the restoration of her invaded rights, a reconciliation with the Parent state on terms consititutional and honourable to both; and that her civil and religious privileges may be secured to the latest posterity.

And it is recommended to Christians of all denominations, to assembly for publick worship, and to abstain from servile labour and recreation on said day.
