Virginia Lawyers for Life – Statement of Agreement

We believe that the right to life is inalienable, bestowed upon each human being by the Creator and predating the institution of government. We believe that from the time of conception, each human being is fully human, and entitled to the basic protections that governments were instituted to provide. We reject the notion that any government may legitimately sanction the intentional destruction of legally innocent human beings, regardless of said human beings’ state of development or any conditions of disability or dependency.

We object to the premise that the legal concept of personhood may justly exclude certain human beings, and to the conclusion of the United States Supreme Court in Roe v. Wade that an unborn human being is not a “person” entitled to the protections of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. Recognizing, however, that we cannot force the High Court to overrule this holding, we determine to work toward laws that will (1) recognize unborn children as legal persons under state constitutions, thus providing an independent foundation of civil rights for all human beings; (2) limit abortions to the extent permitted under existing Supreme Court jurisprudence; (3) prevent unwilling taxpayers from being forced to fund abortions; (4) ensure that women considering abortion are provided any and all information that will assist them in making a truly informed choice; and (5) ensure that abortion clinics and providers are subject to appropriate regulations for the true protection of women’s health.
