Bible Believing Evolutionists
If you don’t recognize this as an oxymoron you should either 1. check the word in the dictionary or 2. change one of your beliefs.
There are many professed Christians that believe in the Bible, with some reservations, and also believe in evolution. The passages in the Bible referring to a six day creation are clear, yet many have been led to believe that parts of the creation account, given by God, are in error. Their faith in God’s word failed them and they believed in man’s faulty interpretation.
They believed historical science has proven long ages for the earth and universe but their historical science is based, not on fact, but atheist interpretations of facts.
It is the popular thing to believe in. True Christianity is not popular in today’s society and especially not in our scientific and education communities.
People today consider themselves enlightened and will believe what they want to believe, not what facts support.
The Bible is clear in dozens if not hundreds of passages, concerning the six day creation and the establishment of the six day work week with the seventh day as the Sabbath. What does the Bible say about evolution? Evolution is a story invented by man in order to exclude God from his life. One might search the Bible over and over and even search a concordance without finding a single verse that even hints at an evolutionary history.
God’s word is the truth and evolutionists are summed up in Romans 1:22: “Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.” There is one God who has offered us eternal life. We have only to accept it.
There may be no greater confusion in the modern church than the attempt to hold two opposing authorities at the same time: the plain Word of God and the evolutionary story of man. Bill Nowers calls it what it is: an oxymoron. A Bible-believing evolutionist is a person trying to stand on Genesis with one foot and Darwin with the other.
The problem is not that Christians should fear science. The problem is that many Christians have been taught to confuse science with naturalistic assumptions about the unobserved past. Once man’s interpretation of origins is placed above God’s revelation, Genesis becomes negotiable. And if Genesis becomes negotiable, the authority of Scripture has already been surrendered.
The Problem of Divided Authority
Every compromise begins with a question of authority. Will the Christian start with God’s Word, or will he start with man’s reconstruction of history?
Theistic evolution tries to keep God in the story while accepting the evolutionary framework. But that framework was not built from Genesis. It was built from naturalism, which assumes that God had no role in creation and that everything must be explained apart from Him.
That is not neutral ground. That is a rival faith.
A Christian cannot claim the Bible is without error while treating the first chapter of Genesis as if God needed Darwin to explain what He meant.
When “Science” Overrules Scripture
Nowers points to one of the most common reasons Christians compromise: they believe historical science has proven long ages for the earth and universe. But historical science is not the same thing as operational science.
Operational science observes, tests, and repeats processes in the present. Historical science looks at evidence in the present and attempts to reconstruct events in the past. That reconstruction depends on assumptions.
So when someone says, “science has proven evolution,” the first question should be: What kind of science? Has anyone observed one kind of creature becoming another kind? Has anyone observed life arising from non-life? Has anyone watched millions of years pass? No. These are interpretations of evidence, not direct observations.
The Christian and the evolutionist may look at the same fossils, the same rocks, the same stars, and the same genetic code. But they do not begin from the same foundation. The Christian begins with the God who was there. The evolutionist begins with a system that excludes Him.
Genesis Is Not Optional
The six days of creation are not a side issue. They are woven into the structure of Scripture. Genesis gives us God as Creator, man made in His image, marriage, sin, death, judgment, and the need for redemption.
Exodus 20:11 ties the six-day work week directly to God’s creation week: “For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day.” That is not vague language. It is a commandment rooted in history.
If the six days are stretched into millions of years, then death, disease, suffering, and extinction existed long before Adam sinned. That does not strengthen the gospel. It weakens the foundation beneath it.
No Hint of Evolution in Scripture
Nowers makes one of his strongest points near the end: search the Bible from beginning to end, and you will not find evolutionary history. You find creation by command. You find creatures reproducing after their kinds. You find Adam formed by God, not risen from animals. You find Eve made from Adam, not from an evolutionary population.
The Bible does not present death, struggle, mutation, and natural selection as God’s creative tools. It presents death as the consequence of sin. That matters because the gospel answers the fall.
Romans 5 does not treat Adam as a symbol. Paul ties sin and death to one real man, and he ties salvation and life to one real Savior, Jesus Christ. If Adam is reimagined to fit evolutionary theory, the gospel logic of Romans is also damaged.
Return to the Plain Word of God
The Christian does not need to be embarrassed by Genesis. We do not defend Scripture by editing it to fit Darwin. We defend truth by trusting the God who was there.
Bill Nowers’ challenge remains timely: either God’s Word is true from the first verse, or man becomes the judge over Scripture. There is no stable middle ground.
God’s Word is truth. Darwinism is man’s attempt to explain life without the Life-Giver.
No argument on a page can change a heart — but the God who created the heavens and the earth can. And He is still calling men and women back to the truth of His Word.
