What Is the First Landing 1607 Covenant?

Before Jamestown and the Mayflower, a little-known but momentous event occurred on the shores of present-day Virginia Beach. On April 29, 1607, English settlers landed at Cape Henry and planted a wooden cross, dedicating the land to the glory of God and the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

This historic act became America’s first recorded covenant with God—a spiritual declaration that this land would be used for His purposes. The First Landing Covenant is a foundational moment in our national story, yet few Virginians have ever heard of it.

President Trump honored this legacy in his official Proclamation on the 418th Anniversary of the First Landing and the Raising of the Cape Henry Cross (April 29, 2025), calling it a sacred cornerstone in America’s biblical and cultural heritage:

God warns in Leviticus 26:39-42 that we will waste away in the lands of our enemies because of our sins and our ancestors’ sins; but if we will confess our sins and the sins of our ancestors—their unfaithfulness and hostility towards God, which made God hostile towards them… then God says, “I will remember my covenant with Jacob and my covenant with Isaac and my covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land.”

Likewise, as we humbly repent, God will remember our forefathers’ 1607 First Landing Land Dedication Covenant, hear our prayers, forgive our sins and heal our land. (2 Chronicles 7:14)

About the Author

Virginia Christian Alliance
The mission of the VIRGINIA CHRISTIAN ALLIANCE is to promote moral, social and scientific issues we face today from a Biblical point of view. In addition we will refute and oppose, not with hate, but with facts and humor, the secular cultural abuses that have overridden laws and standards of conduct of the past. We will encourage Christians to participate in these efforts through conferences, development of position papers, booklets and tracts, radio/TV spots, newspaper ads and articles and letters-to-the editor, web sites, newsletters and providing speakers for church and civic meetings.
