2016 Presidential Election Results by County[i]
[1] Newman, Mark, Maps of the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election Results, Department of Physics and Center for the Study of Complex Systems, University of Michigan, Updated: December 2, 2016. http://www-personal.umich.edu/~mejn/election/2016/. Accessed January, 2020.
A fundamental principle is at stake, as shown in the map above. Moving from an electoral college to a popular vote would significantly change our national elections. We see this already in many of our state wide elections where New York City determines the outcomes in New York, Chicago in Illinois, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, Los Angeles and San Francisco in California, or Northern Virginia, Richmond, and the Tidewater area in Virginia.
There are a little over 3,100 county and county-equivalent areas in America. Hillary Clinton won the popular vote while carrying only 487 total counties, only about 15% of the total. Do you want 15% the country to control any national election or should the entire country matter? The map below shows the 2016 presidential election results by county. The map speaks for itself.
