The Ten Commandments are found in two places in the Word of God (Exodus 20:1–17 and Deuteronomy 5:1–21

The Ten Commandments are as follows:

  1. You shall have no other gods before God.
  2. You shall not make or worship graven images.
  3. You shall not take God’s name in vain.
  4. Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy.
  5. Honor your father and mother.
  6. You shall not murder.
  7. You shall not commit adultery.
  8. You shall not steal.
  9. You shall not bear false witness (lie).
  10. You shall not covet.

Believers would be wise to make it a commitment and habit to pray the Ten Commandments every single day.

Here’s why: The Ten Commandments summarize the wisdom of all of the Word of God in ten simple and powerful commandments.  All the wisdom of God’s Word can be summarized and drawn from the insight and understanding found in these ten unique commands.

Praying the Ten Commandments every day is utilizing a potent weapon God has made available to all.   And today would be a great day to begin this commitment in our lives.

Here is a prayer based on the Ten Commandments that one can pray daily for himself/herself, the family, the church, and our nation :

Lord, thank you for my family, the church, and this nation.

Help us, Lord put you first in every way and in all that we do. Help us not make or desire any graven images.  Help us honor your name, remember the Sabbath to keep it holy, and honor our parents.

Lord, turn our thoughts away from murder, adultery, and theft. Help us to tell the truth and not covet what belongs to others. Thank you, Lord, for hearing our prayer, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Will praying the Ten Commandments this way really make a difference?  Praying this for ourselves, our families, our church, and our nation can make a tremendous difference.

The Word of God is the will of God and His Word tells us in I John 5:13-15:

I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life. And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.

His Word is powerful, wonderful, and true.  When we pray it in faith, God will always hear and answer that prayer.

So, the challenge to you is to start praying the Ten Commandments every day – starting this day.  And the power of God, in praying them, will begin to work in a greater way in our lives, our church, and our nation.
