Crossroads: At Creation — Male and Female?

“In the beginning, God created Man in His own image, Male and Female created He them. And God saw that it was very good!” (Genesis 1:27-31)

“However, going against what God had so clearly created, men became vain in their imaginations. Professing to be wise, they became as fools. Therefore, God gave them over to their unclean lusts and vile affections. Both men and women dishonored their own bodies to do things that are against nature.” (Romans 1:20-32)

Background: God as Creator?

This is Part II of our program with Pastor Todd Pruitt on some of the “Big Questions” that flow from the account of Creation as recorded in the book of Genesis. CLICK HERE FOR MP3 AUDIO CLIP

In Part I, we began with the simple question: “Is the Creation account fact or fiction, and why does it matter anyway?” For example, can’t we have a Creation without having to drag God into the picture? Isn’t it all just one big myth, so that all we really have is a Godless universe?

But if we reject the Biblical account of Creation, don’t we also cast doubt on the rest of the Bible? If so, who decides what is Right and Wrong and between Good and Evil?

Without God, don’t we create a moral vacuum and a culture of confusion and chaos? And won’t that lead to tyranny where might makes right in order to keep some semblance of “law and order”?

That was Part I. If you would like to hear it repeated, go HERE and click on the Crossroads’ link on the home page.

Part II: What Does It Mean to Be Human?

That sets the stage for our conversation with Pastor Todd this weekend about the Genesis account that God created Man, Male and Female in His own image — and why that matters in our culture today.

We’ll begin with the recent directive from the Obama administration that public schools must open up girls’ restrooms and locker facilities to boys who “feel” like girls. Really?

Since when do we determine our gender by how we “feel” rather than by our God-given anatomy? And what does that say about the spiritual condition of our culture?

What does Pastor Todd mean when he says that “the divinely ordered male/female gender construct of humanity is vital for the health, happiness, and flourishing of men and women”?

Why, beginning with man’s disobedience in the Garden of Eden, do men and women continue to rebel against the natural and moral boundaries that God has set? And why do LGBT activists demand that everyone embrace this idea that gender is a matter of feelings and desires rather than of science?

But where does that take us? What happens when people deny objective truth and reality and are left with nothing but their own human impulses and passions? When all that is “good” has been debunked and all that remains is “I want”?

Finally, what can we say to a person who is confused about his or her gender? Where is their hope? For that matter, where is the hope for all of us?
