Discover why George Barna advocates for a return to biblical roots and the need for authentic discipleship in today’s church.

In today’s rapidly changing world, the Church faces numerous challenges that threaten its foundation and mission. George Barna, a prominent Christian researcher, recently highlighted the urgent need for the Church to return to its biblical roots. This shift is essential for fostering genuine discipleship and ensuring the growth of a biblical worldview among future generations.

The Modern Church Structure

Barna argues that the current structure of many churches, with their extensive programs and elaborate buildings, is not aligned with the New Testament model. He states, “The local church, as we’ve created it, is man-made. It’s not in the Scriptures”.  Instead of focusing on these external elements, Barna emphasizes the importance of investing in individuals and building them up spiritually.

Discipleship and Spiritual Education

A key aspect of returning to biblical roots is prioritizing discipleship and spiritual education, especially within families. Barna urges believers to recognize the role of parents as the primary spiritual leaders of their children. He states, “Our primary focus needs to be on children and growing their biblical worldview”. By doing so, the Church can raise a new generation of believers who are deeply rooted in their faith.

The Role of Artificial Intelligence

Another pressing issue is the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on the Church. Barna warns that while AI can offer convenience, it also poses significant risks to the authenticity and depth of spiritual teachings. He encourages church leaders to be cautious about integrating AI into their ministries and to focus on genuine, spirit-led teaching.

The Path Forward

To address these challenges, Barna advocates for a radical return to biblical principles and the empowerment of parents as spiritual leaders. He believes that this approach is crucial for the Church to thrive and maintain its influence in an increasingly secular society. Barna’s call to action is clear: “We either will put up or shut up. And I would suggest that we put up”.

By embracing a return to biblical roots and focusing on authentic discipleship, the Church can navigate the challenges of the modern world and continue to fulfill its mission.
