Introduction
On February 4, 2025, President Donald Trump issued an executive order to withdraw the United States from certain United Nations organizations and review U.S. participation in international treaties and agreements. The order calls explicitly for halting funding to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). The justification for this decision is clear: these organizations have acted contrary to U.S. interests, harbored anti-Israel sentiment, and, in the case of UNRWA, been infiltrated by terrorist organizations.
While many will frame this decision as a matter of political debate, a Biblical worldview provides deeper insight into why national sovereignty is essential and why the U.S. must stand against globalist organizations that undermine God’s order. Additionally, this decision aligns with the U.S. Constitution’s principles regarding national sovereignty, executive authority, and the proper role of government in foreign affairs.
God’s Design for Nations and Sovereignty
National sovereignty is not a human invention but a Biblical principle. God established nations, giving them distinct boundaries and governing authorities.
Acts 17:26 – “And He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place.”
Similarly, the U.S. Constitution affirms national sovereignty through its foreign policy and treaty provisions. Article II, Section 2 grants the President the power to make treaties with the advice and consent of the Senate, ensuring that international agreements align with the nation’s interests. The Tenth Amendment further emphasizes that powers not delegated to the federal government are reserved to the states or the people, reinforcing self-governance rather than globalist influence.
In many ways, the United Nations seeks to dissolve these distinctions and place global governance above national rule. While cooperation between nations is beneficial, an overreach of international bodies that dictate policies contradicts the Biblical model of sovereign governance and constitutional principles that limit the extent of foreign entanglements.
The Role of Government in Protecting Its People
The Bible is clear that governments exist to uphold righteousness, protect citizens, and maintain justice.
Romans 13:1-4 – “For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God… For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval.”
This aligns with the Preamble of the U.S. Constitution, which states that the government exists to “provide for the common defense” and “secure the blessings of liberty.” The executive order highlights that UNRWA has been linked to terrorist groups, making continued funding a direct violation of the government’s constitutional duty to protect American interests and allies.
If an organization, such as UNRWA, is funding or supporting terrorism, then the U.S. government must separate from and cease support of that institution. To continue funding an entity that enables wickedness would violate both Biblical justice and the Constitution’s mandate to provide for the nation’s defense.
The Danger of Globalism Without God
A world government may sound appealing in theory, but when unity is pursued apart from God, it leads to corruption and rebellion. This is precisely what happened at the Tower of Babel.
Genesis 11:4-9 – “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and make a name for ourselves… But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building… So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth.”
From a constitutional perspective, Article I, Section 8 grants Congress specific powers related to defense, trade, and treaties, ensuring that authority remains within national governance rather than surrendering sovereignty to international organizations. The UN increasingly promotes policies that are at odds with America’s founding principles, pushing for centralized global authority that undermines the rights of individual nations.
Why Supporting Israel Matters
One of the strongest Biblical justifications for withdrawing from the UN is its anti-Israel stance. Scripture is clear that those who curse Israel will be cursed, and those who bless Israel will be blessed.
Genesis 12:3 – “I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse, and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”
The U.S. has long stood as an ally of Israel, and the executive order affirms this commitment by ceasing participation in UN organizations that promote hostility toward God’s chosen people. Article II, Section 3 of the Constitution empowers the President to conduct foreign relations and ensure that America’s alliances reflect its values. Ensuring U.S. foreign policy aligns with Biblical principles reinforces our faith commitments and constitutional responsibilities.
Stewardship of Resources: Ending UN Funding
Scripture teaches that personal or national resources must be used wisely and righteously.
- Proverbs 22:7 – “The borrower is slave to the lender.”
- Matthew 25:14-30 – Parable of the Talents (wise management of resources)
The U.S. Constitution also affirms fiscal responsibility. Article I, Section 9 gives Congress the power of the purse, ensuring that tax dollars are spent in ways that benefit the nation. The executive order rightly prioritizes American taxpayer dollars, ensuring they are not sent to corrupt or wasteful institutions. Instead of funding anti-Israel, anti-American programs, resources should be directed toward domestic needs, national security, and missions that align with America’s constitutional and Biblical values.
Conclusion: A Step in the Right Direction
The decision to withdraw from certain United Nations bodies aligns with both Biblical and Constitutional principles:
- It upholds national sovereignty as designed by God (Acts 17:26) and affirmed by the Constitution (Article II, Section 2).
- It fulfills the government’s duty to protect citizens and promote righteousness (Romans 13:1-4, Preamble of the Constitution).
- It separates the U.S. from godless globalism (Genesis 11:4-9, Article I, Section 8).
- It aligns with God’s command to bless Israel (Genesis 12:3, Article II, Section 3).
- It promotes financial stewardship and wise use of taxpayer funds (Proverbs 22:7, Article I, Section 9).
As Christians and constitutionalists, we should support policies that move our nation closer to justice, sovereignty, and God-honoring governance. May we continue to pray for wisdom for our leaders and seek to align our nation with God’s perfect will.
