The school year is barely underway, and most parents have already handed their children over to someone else for seven hours a day. A new documentary from a Virginia ministry asks whether we have thought carefully enough about that, and it is coming to Hanover County Wednesday evening.

Who is in the film

Educated for Liberty features a number of nationally known Christian voices in education, culture, law, and public policy, including Mike Farris, George Barna, Carol Swain, Sam Sorbo, Walker Wildmon, David Barton, and Tim Barton.

The film is written and hosted by Stephen McDowell, president of the Providence Foundation.

The film runs approximately 75 minutes, excluding credits.

Why it matters to parents

Educated for Liberty: Restoring Biblical Education comes from the Providence Foundation, a Christian educational ministry headquartered in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The film encourages parents to take up their God-given responsibility for their children’s education and calls pastors and churches to come alongside them in that responsibility.

It traces how families, churches, and private schools taught early Americans, and it makes the case that a people cannot remain free without a biblical education handed down to the next generation.

The argument runs in one direction: liberty is not self-sustaining, and what one generation fails to teach, the next will not know to defend.

The film’s conclusions are its own, and thoughtful Christians may weigh some of them differently. But the question it puts before parents is worth an evening—and worth asking before the school year gets away from us.
