More than 300 Virginia pastors have put their names publicly behind a letter addressing abortion, marriage, gender, and biblical responsibility. The question now is not merely who has signed it, but whether Virginia churches will sound a clear biblical word before November 3.

A Watchman’s Question

Has your pastor seen the letter? Has he signed it? And will your congregation hear biblical teaching about these amendments before voting ends?

Dear Christian, there are moments when silence is not neutrality.

Virginia voters are being asked to consider two proposed constitutional amendments touching questions that Scripture does not leave undefined: the sanctity of human life, marriage, male and female, and the authority of God over what He has created.

Now more than 300 pastors from across the Commonwealth have signed an open letter addressing Amendments 1 and 2. They have put their names in public view. They have stated what they believe. And they have urged Virginia Christians to consider these questions in the light of God’s Word.

I am grateful they have spoken.

But a name on a website should not be the end of the matter. The church must teach. Christians must read. Pastors must shepherd. And voters should know what they are being asked to place into Virginia’s Constitution before they cast a ballot.

What the Pastors Are Saying

On Amendment 1, the pastors begin where Christians should begin: not with a party platform, but with creation.

“God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”

Genesis 1:27

This is not merely a statement about human origins. It establishes human worth. If men and women bear the image of God, human dignity is not granted by government, measured by usefulness, or created by public opinion. It comes from the Creator.

That is why the pastors apply Genesis 1:27 to unborn life. Their letter affirms the worth of human beings from conception through natural death and argues that unborn children must not be excluded from the protection owed to human life.

On Amendment 2, the pastors again return to creation. They affirm that God created humanity male and female and that marriage is not an institution invented by legislatures or courts. Jesus Himself pointed back to creation when He spoke of marriage.

The issue, then, is larger than political preference. For the Christian, the question is whether God has spoken and whether we are willing to order our lives, our churches, and our public witness accordingly.

Truth Without Hatred

The pastors also make clear that biblical conviction does not authorize contempt. Their letter rejects hatred and harassment and affirms that every person should be treated with love, kindness, respect, dignity, and compassion.

That matters. A watchman is not called to hate the city he warns. He sounds the alarm because danger is real and because people matter.

The Letter Ends Where Christian Witness Must End

The letter does not end with an election slogan. It ends with Jesus Christ.

The pastors speak about sin, grace, Christ’s death and bodily resurrection, forgiveness, and eternal life. They invite readers to turn to Christ and even encourage those who do not own a Bible to obtain one and begin reading the Gospel of John.

That is the right order. Political victories cannot save a soul. Constitutional language cannot regenerate a heart. Our hope is not Richmond. Our hope is Christ.

But trusting Christ does not excuse silence. Scripture repeatedly joins faithfulness to obedience. We speak the truth, defend the vulnerable, love our neighbors, and leave the results in God’s hands.

More Than 300 Pastors Have Put Their Names Down

At the time VCA reviewed the website, the list showed 330 signatures.

They come from churches across Northern Virginia, Richmond and Central Virginia, Hampton Roads, Lynchburg, Roanoke, the Shenandoah Valley, Southside, and beyond. The list includes pastors from Baptist, Presbyterian, Reformed, Lutheran, Anglican, Mennonite, Methodist, Bible, and other congregations.

That breadth matters. This is not one pastor, one denomination, or one corner of the Commonwealth speaking.

Has Your Pastor Signed?

Go to VirginiaPastors.org and look.

If your pastor has signed, thank him. Public conviction carries a cost, and encouragement matters.

If his name is not there, do not assume you know why. He may not have seen the letter. Send it to him respectfully and ask him to read it.

But Ask One More Question

Will our church address the biblical issues raised by Amendments 1 and 2 before November 3?

The letter’s organizers themselves encourage pastors to share the letter with their congregations.

A signature tells people where a pastor stands. Biblical preaching helps them understand why.

Dear pastor, this is where the watchman image becomes uncomfortable. Ezekiel was not praised merely for recognizing danger. He was commanded to sound the warning. The responsibility was not to control the response. The responsibility was faithfulness.

Our pulpits should never become campaign platforms. But neither should they become silent precisely where Scripture has spoken clearly.

A Note You Can Send Your Pastor

Pastor [Name],

I came across the open letter from Virginia pastors concerning Amendments 1 and 2. More than 300 pastors from around Virginia have signed it.

I would be grateful if you would read the letter and prayerfully consider whether you would like to add your name.

I would also appreciate hearing our church address the biblical issues raised by these amendments before voting concludes November 3.

Thank you for faithfully shepherding our church.

Who Can Sign?

The organizers invite Virginia pastors who affirm the Apostles’ Creed, the Nicene Creed, and the Five Solas of the Protestant Reformation to add their names. Submitted signatures are reviewed before publication.

Read the Sources for Yourself

Do not settle for a campaign slogan, a social-media graphic, or even VCA’s summary. Go to the sources.

Official Virginia Question 2 Information

Read the Commonwealth’s explanation

Read It. Check the List. Talk to Your Pastor.

Read the pastors’ letter. Read the Commonwealth’s explanation of both amendments. Open the Scriptures the pastors cite. Then ask whether your church will address these questions biblically before November 3.

The watchman does not control the outcome. He is accountable to sound the warning.

And after the warning is sounded, our hope remains exactly where it was before any ballot was printed: in Jesus Christ, who is Lord over kings, courts, constitutions, churches, and nations.
